Well, here we are with just ONE week left of the Competition!

I hope you have enjoyed this little extra incentive to help you certify as many students as possible. As stated on the IC3 Cup website, winners will be announced on the IC³ Cup website and via e-mail on June 1, 2009.

Even if you are nowhere near winning the Cup, Certiport would like to offer you an IC3 Cup t-shirt as a souvenier of your participation this year. Each IC3 team coach may receive one IC3 t-shirt in the mail by completing the survey that was emailed to him or her today. At the end of the survey you will be able to provide a mailing address for the t-shirt. If you are a team coach and have not seen this email, please contact me at ic3cup (at) certiport (dot) com.

In addition to the t-shirt, completing the survey will score your team an additional 450 bonus points!

Surveys must be completed by midnight on Friday, May 15th.

Even if the t-shirt and bonus points do not interest you, I would very much appreciate your time responding to the brief survey, in order to help me and my co-workers make this competition better than ever next year.

Counting Down to the End of the Competition: 2 Weeks

Hello Friends!
We are coming to the end (May 15th) - Can you believe it? Please feel free to email me at ic3cup (at) certiport (dot) com to check on your team's current points as we have it. Also, time is running out to let me know if your team coach is certified as an Authorized Instructor or if any instructors on your team have earned their AI certification during this year's competition. Don't miss that opportunity to claim points!

Next week I will be emailing each team coach a survey about the IC3 World Cup, to help Certiport improve the competition next year. For completing the survey, your team will receive an extra 450 points and we'll send you a 2009 IC3 Cup t-shirt in the mail (for the team coach, presumably). If you are a team coach and you don't receive a survey, please email me or leave a comment on this post with your correct email address.

Worldwide competition for IC3
The information technology center of AlQods Open University aims to elevate the name of Palestine between 70 countries and compete with the skills and infrastructure available at the university.
All candidates and employees of the university has the needed skills , our role is to prepare them for the exam and explain them the nature of the certificate.
The aim of AlQods university through the training session is to stimulate candidate participation to the competition to prepare a staff ready for challenges under the flag of Palestine.
The competition is new in Palestine, and a few people understand the meaningful of the competition not only on the scientific and technical side but also on the political level.
We aim through the competition is to encourage the Palestinian staff from different institute, starting from the university to develop their skills in IT.
Many candidates contacted the university to participate to the competition and represent Palestine in the WW competition

6 weeks left!

Happy Friday! Just 6 weeks left in the Competition, can you believe it? It's a busy time of year for students and teachers with school ending for the summer in many places, and a very busy time for IC3 testing! If you are not ranking as highly as you would like to in the Competition, don't lose heart! Things are likely to shuffle around quite a bit in the next month (or so I imagine) so keep up the good work and if possible, try to think of ways to add more people to your team.

Another way to earn extra points is to take advantage of Certiport's BONUS POINTS offer. Submit a video of your team for 300 bonus points guaranteed. We are collecting videos that we might put together (as in, we'll take bits and pieces from different videos) to make a cool presentation giving life to the idea that the IC3 Cup is very much a worldwide program that helps people in all different places and languages. If your video is good quality and we decide to use it, your team will earn an additional 1,000 bonus points! The deadline to submit a video is April 15th. Click here and here for details.

Looking for Ways to Earn More Points?

Hi everyone! How is testing going? Just a few weeks left of the competition, but I know this is the time when lots of centers kick it into high gear testing their students at the end of the year, so it's going to be really interesting to see how the top 10 shuffles up between now and May 15th!

Now for some tips to leave you with before I take off for a week...

Remember, the #1 way to earn points is obviously to get more people involved in IC3 training and certification! Jorge Luis Garcia Argandoña, former coach of Colegio Universitario Boston, and IC3 Cup winner for the past two years explained that the root of the organization's success was making IC3 a priority and advertising.

He said, "...It was decided to invest in technology and extend it to all of the regional campuses, through massive campaigns in the communications media (television, radio, local and national newspapers, flyers, advertising material, events, employment fairs, student fairs, massive technology events, etc)."

Remember, anyone can join your team and become IC3 certified - students, teachers, parents - anyone that can benefit from the knowledge and/or credentials! Best of luck to you in your endeavors.

More Advice for Instructors... and the Top Teams of the Week

Hello again friends! Today I have more helpful hints for instructors on how to help students pass the IC3 exams. The following advice is from Carleen Powell, an IC3 Authorized Instructor at Tri-County Adult Career Center in Ohio (US). Thank you, Ms. Powell, for taking the time to share your expertise!

Have your students take the exam as soon as they finish studying the concepts so the information will be fresh in their minds.

Make Sure Your AI Points Count!

This is a reminder that if 1) your team coach was certified as an IC3 Authorized Instructor (AI) before you registered to join the IC3 World Cup competition, or 2) any instructor on your team has received his or her IC3 AI Certification since you started competing -- You must let us know in order to receive those points. Please send an email to ic3cup (at) certiport (dot) com and when the instructor's certification is verified, you will receive the points!

As you know, team coaches that are certified prior to registration in the competition receive 300 points for their team. Any instructor that certifies as an Authorized Instructor during the competition earns 100 points for the team.

It's fun to compete in the IC3 World Cup and have a chance at winning something material to show for all your hard work, but we all know the real reason behind IC3 certification: To help set students up to succeed in a technological world. With technology, the rules are changing all the time, but it is my opinion that IC3 just introduces a person into the conversation and afterwards, they are prepared to continue learning and keep pace with the rest of the world. No matter who wins the IC3 Cup, at the end of this competition, thousands of students will be educated in computer literacy and that is far more important than prizes or recognition.

On that note, here are a few words of advice from one successful Authorized Instructor, Janice Cheever (Laramie County Community College in Wyoming, USA)...

1. We use the practice tests from Certiport, but find that they normally do not address some of the skills as is needed on the exam. We have created additional exercises that develop those skills along with the Virtual Learning Center software that is used.

2. We hold review sessions for each of the three modules as students are beginning to prepare for the testing.

3. If students are still not passing after this preparation, and we have had some who do not, especially on the Computing Fundamentals; we have textbooks that we make available in our lab that reflect the learning skills needed for the IC3. Examples include: Computer Literacy Basics: A Guide to IC3 certification; Discovering Computers and other basic computer textbooks.

Dear Internet and Core Computing Wizards Worldwide,

I know many of you do not celebrate Christmas, and in some countries this is a New Year's tree, not a Christmas tree, but whatever your religion, I hope that the end of December is a happy time for you.

It is a VERY happy time of the year here in America with Christmas and New Year's Day. I, your blog updater, am particularly happy because I am graduating from Brigham Young University this month after 4 long years of work and exams! I'm sure many of you can identify with the relief of finishing exams. :)

Since it's the holiday season, I will be heading to Seattle, Washington to be with my family and I won't be able to update the blog on December 26th or January 2nd. I know you are all very disappointed, but don't get too down about it, these blog posts will start up again in all their IC3 glory on January 9th.

As I said last week, here at the Certiport headquarters, we would like to know you better! And we're willing to throw in some BONUS POINTS as an incentive for you to tell us about yourselves in a team video! Here's what to do...

REQUIRED VIDEO COMPONENTS

First, team members will address the following questions in their native language:

What is your team name? How many people are on your team so far?
What motivated you to pursue training and certification?
How has certification changed your job/career (for example: recognition, advancement, increased confidence, job opportunities)?
How has the IC³ World Cup helped your organization?
How have the IC³ exams helped you achieve, be distinguished, and/or advance?

Second, one or more members of the team will simply state the following phrases in their native language:

"IC³ Certification will help me achieve my personal academic and career goals."
"Internet and Computing Core Certification gives me self-confidence and will help me in future schooling or employment."
"IC³ Certification has helped me sharpen and certify my skills, which will help me advance in other technological skills."

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Teams will post their videos on YouTube and email a link to ic3cup at certiport.com.
If the video is chosen to be used in the IC³ feature video at the annual company Pathways conference, featured team members will be asked to sign and return a release form giving Certiport permission to use the video.

DEADLINES AND POINTS

Submit video link by January 15th, 2009 for 600 points.
Submit video link by April 15th, 2009 for 300 points.
A few good quality, interesting, inspiring videos will be presented in part or in full at Pathways in July. Teams with videos selected for use in that program will receive an additional 1,000 bonus points.

Happy Halloween WORLD!

How many of you participating teams are doing something to celebrate Halloween? I know it's not a holiday that everyone celebrates, but it's spreading around the world, right? Is it really? I don't know. Feel free to comment below and share what you are doing on Friday night, October 31!

Sometimes I get so curious about you guys. The only countries I have been to outside the USA are Mexico and Canada (our North American neighbors), Russia and Estonia. What is life like in Libya? Japan? The Bahamas? It would be so nice to see you and hear your stories that we might even give you... a few extra POINTS if you would introduce yourselves. ;) Details next week.

Secrets to Earning More Points

As you may know, there are 4 ways to earn points:

If your team coach is already certified as an IC³ Authorized Instructor when you register, your team starts out with 300 points.
Any qualified teacher on your team can become certified as an IC³ Authorized Instructor, earning 100 points per instructor.
Every time a team member (which can be students, teachers, parents, friends—anyone you can recruit!) passes an exam for the first time, he or she earns 50 points for the team.
When a team member has passed all three exams, he or she is officially certified, earning an additional automatic 50 points.

Now I will tell you the best hint around for winning the IC3 World Cup Competition: Get as many people on your team as you possibly can and help each person earn his or her Certification! Here are some tips for making the Competition a success for your team (I am sure you will come up with more creative ideas as well)...

Help every member of your team pass all 3 exams and earn his or her Certification (3 exams per team member + Certification = 200 points possible per person).
Get parents involved! Why not? A basic knowledge of internet and computing skills can open doors for everyone and it's never too late to begin.
Advertise! Download and print marketing materials from our ftp site right now (click here). Certiport has recently sent promotional posters to many of the testing centers and solution providers. If you have not seen any posters and would like to order some, please contact Certiport as soon as possible.
Recruit more teachers to your team and have them certify as IC3 Authorized Instructors. Authorized Instructors not only earn big points for the team, they are a great support in teaching and preparing other teammates to pass exams!

T-shirts... and Your Friendly Certiport Marketing Department

On the thought of giving you more information on the prizes you can win, I asked Sunny and Denece (my other boss) if they had any pictures of the t-shirts that the winning teams received last year or the year before. They didn't have any pictures, but they did have a couple of shirts from the last 2 years. I suggested that someone put one on so we could take a picture and post it on the blog. Well, the next thing you know the whole marketing department was in on it...

We thought we were so funny, we even made a video! For your viewing pleasure...

Let's elaborate on the prize package!!! First of all, this is a map of the 3 regions, each of which will produce a 1st prize winner:

These 3 winning teams will receive:

a 1st place trophy
100 custom t-shirts for your team members (see next blog entry for pictures)
$5,000 to spend on computers for your testing center

The team who earns the most points worldwide will win the IC3 World Cup Championship. As a grand prize, Certiport will fly the winning team coach to Toronto, Canada next summer (2009) to be honored at the company's annual conference, Pathways. Welcome Back

Welcome back to the IC3 World Cup competition!

This last August we celebrated with our winners of the 2008 competition in beautiful Kona, Hawaii. It really was great to see my friends again from Colegio Boston from Costa Rica since this is the second time in a row that they've won the competition.

Here I am with Jorge Luis Garcia who is the team coach for Colegio Boston:

And here I am again with our winner of the IC3 World Cup Exam Competition, Carl Furst, from Bits and Grips in Germany:

That's a nice big check isn't it?

This year there have been some changes to the competition. Number one, Benchmark is no longer included as one of the activities to earn points in the competition. However, we strongly recommend that you still use it as it helps prepare students to pass the IC3 exams. Remember, you only earn points for the exams that your students pass.

Second, this year we will have regional winners and then 1 worldwide winner that will join us at Pathways 2009. There will be 3 regional winners--one from the Americas (North and South), EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) and APAC (Asia). The regional winner with the most points at the end of the competition will be our worldwide champion that will win the free trip.

Pathways 2009 will be held in Toronto, Canada. For more information regarding Pathways, you can visit our site.

On Your Mark, Get Set....

Hello and welcome to the 2009 IC3 World Cup Competition!

My name is Teresa the Intern and I will be the main person updating this blog. I'm currently a senior, double-majoring in Advertising and Russian at Brigham Young University, which is not far from here so I can go to school and still come in to Certiport to keep you updated on the Competition.

I just started working at Certiport about 3 days ago, so one of the first tasks I was given is to take the pre-tests and exams, so I will know what it is that this competition is all about. I just have to say... I consider myself to be pretty computer literate, but those pre-tests were harder than I thought!

Anyway, when I read a blog, the most important thing to me is the pictures, so to keep you entertained, here is a picture of me (the blonde) and Sunny, my supervisor, who posts messages on here from time to time as well.

I am so excited to work with all of you. Let's get started with registration and let the fun begin!

The Final Results

The IC3 World Cup has now officially come to a close.

First off, we’d just like to thank you for participating in the 2008 IC3 World Cup.

This year there were hundreds of teams, representing dozens of countries, which certainly made for an exciting competition!

Now that the competition has come to a close, we have managed to calculate the final standings in the competition.

The first place team in the PATHWAYS competition was:
Colegio Universatario Boston from Costa Rica

The first place team in the Exam Competition was:
Bits & Grips from Germany

As the first place winners in their respective competitions, both teams will recieve a $5,000 gift certificate to buy computer hardware, 100 IC3 World Cup team jerseys, and an all expense paid trip for the team coach to Certiport’s PATHWAYS Conference in Hawaii.

This is likely to be one of my lasts posts. Sad, I know. But the competition comes to an end tomorrow. Because of this I won't be posting the standings today, but we are working on getting the final scores finished. These will be announced on June 13th.

Hi Everyone,

This is the last week of the competition. How exciting! By June 13th we plan on announcing the winner. Actually I should say "winners" because so many of you did such an excellent job. I wish we could all bring you to Hawaii.

We definitely learned a lot this competition so next year will be even better. I hope that all of you sign up again next year and give the IC3 World Cup another shot. One of the things that I've seen over the last three years that the more times the teams participate, the better they seem to perform.

Next week I'm actually off on a personal vacation to Hawaii. As I sip my pina colada on the beach I'll be thinking of all of you!

Greg is out on vacation for the next couple of weeks so I've been recruited to work on the standings report and unfortunately I'm just not as quick as Greg is on getting the standings up. 7 Weeks Left!

There are just 7 weeks left of this competition and based on the latest reports I can see that many of the teams have dramatically increased their points. I really think that it could be a surprise on who ends up winning the competition.

I know that many of the teams have delivered several IC3 exams. Keep in mind that you can generate 50 "bonus" points if your team members also receive their IC3 certification. So if you have team members that have taken only 1 or 2 of the exams, I would encourage them to take all three so you can get those extra points.

The competition is being extended!

Hi Everyone!

To start off with, I have a big announcement to make. The competition has been extended to May 31, 2008 in order to give everyone a little more time to earn points. So if I were you, I would start making plans now in order to take advantage of this extra time.

Anyway, continuing the little commentary on ways of earning points, this week I'm going to briefly discuss earning points by passing an IC3 Exam. Each time a team member passes one of the IC3 exams during the competition, that team member will earn the team 50 points. As I'm sure you know, there are 3 different exams, meaning if one student passes all three exams he or she can earn your team 150 points.

Now even though it's "only" 50 points per exam, this is the category that the majority of teams are earning the most points from. So start motivating your team members, and get them passing those exams!

Scoring Points: Becoming an IC3 Authorized Instructor

Hi Guys,

Today I'm going to talk more about ways to earn points, this time focusing on becoming Authorized Instructors during the competition.

After you have received your 300 points for your already existing IC3 Authorized instructor, you can gain even more points if someone on your team becomes an AI during the competition. This is worth a whopping 300 points for every single team member that becomes an AI, and so this has the potential to score you the most points of any of the ways.

But of course there’s a reason that this is worth so many points, because of all the ways to earn points, it’s also the hardest. So if you want to really take advantage of this, you’re going to need to plan and organize it now. But if you do, it’s really going to pay off.

So just as an update, Greg is spending a lot of time getting the reports finalized and next week you will receive an email letting you know how many points your team has earned. Shortly after that we will post the competition standings on the IC3 World Cup website at http://www.certiport.com/ic3cup and post the results on this blog too. We will plan on updating the standings on a weekly basis.

Scoring Points: Existing IC3 Authorized Instructors

Hey guys,

I often receive questions concerning the point system for the competition. So I decided a good idea would be to spend a few weeks having a short discussion about each of the ways to score points.

The first way listed is, “Existing IC3 Authorized Instructor.” This can earn a total of 300 points. What it means is that each team is given 300 points for up to one person who is already an Authorized Instructor. (All other points earned for AI, the person must become an AI during the competition.) This is the only time that a team can earn points for something that was done before the competition began.

Tip of the Day

The most common question I get asked is "what are some of the tips and tricks to winning the IC3 World Cup?" Fortunately the competition is fairly straightforward so it's not too difficult to figure out how to maximize your team point earnings.

However, I will say that based on my past experience one common strategy with the winning teams of the past has been maximizing quantity of team members.

The rules state that there is no limit to the number of people that you can have on your team as long as all the activities happen at the same center. Thus, it's a fair assumption that if you have 1000 people on your team, you will probably perform better than the team with just 10 members.

One team that competed in the competition a couple years back took this strategy to heart and started recruiting parents and other teachers in addition to their students to participate as a part of their team. Needless to say, they did win that year.

So keep that in mind as you think about your winning strategy.

Hey everyone,

Things with the IC3 World Cup are really moving along and new teams are signing up every week. However if you are currently registered, and you haven’t yet sent in your center ID# do it as soon as possible. Otherwise you won’t have close to as many points as everyone else when the rankings are announced.

In other news with the additions of a few new teams, the IC3 World Cup is now being represented by six of the seven continents. Now we just need a team from Antarctica to register.

Welcome to the IC3 World Cup Competition

Hi everyone. My name is Sunny Washington and I am the IC3 Program Manager at Certiport. Together with Greg and the rest of the IC3 World Cup team we'll be working with you throughout this competition to make this a positive experience for you. Right now we have several teams representing over 20 countries worldwide.

This is the third year that I've worked on the IC3 World Cup. The competition began in 2006 as a test to see if there was any interest in an IC3 competition. We were pleasantly surprised at the thousands and thousands of people that participated in the competition that year. In 2006 we were able to award Orem Junior High and CompUSA with the IC3 Cup Trophy:

In 2007 we selected three winners to represent their own areas. Our winners last year were Team Colegio Boston Universitario from Costa Rica, Team Formosa from China, and Team Technokids-Technoplus from Greece.

I had the pleasure of meeting with both Team Colegio Boston Universitario and Team Technokids-Technoplus in Orlando at the Certiport Pathways conference and give them their trophies.

Here are the two winners Edgardo Pacheceo and Dimitris Vergos at our after gala celebration.

This year our competition is especially exciting because of all the new teams that are participating in addition to teams that have participated in the past. I'm thrilled that we have so many teams from so many different countries this year also.

Here you’ll be able to get all the latest news on what’s going on in the IC3 World Cup competition.

I’m Greg Jeffs, a.k.a the lowly intern. And I’ll be one of the people keeping you updated through this blog. In my life, I spend part of my time working here at Certiport and part of my time as a senior at Brigham Young University. I enjoy skiing, reading, and long walks on the beach… but you probably don’t care much about that. My life in relation to you is to do whatever I can (as long as it is legal) to help you in the IC3 World Cup competition so you can win some great prizes, including a free trip to Hawaii. (I just wish part of my job description was to get me that free trip to Hawaii.)

But enough about me, let’s talk about more important things. Recently a lot of people have been asking about the current rankings. Right now we’re working on calculating the standings in the competition and before the end of next week we should be able to tell you how you’re matching up against the other teams. So make sure to check back soon to learn about that and all the newest updates in the competition.
